Technical Bulletin

Summary:  Users may experience problems when using the telnet protocol through a web browser.

ViaDuct 4.x

Symptom:

After installing ViaDuct, the user gets an error message when they insert the following into a browser, "http://domain".

Before the error occurs users normally see a window with the title "ViaDuct/Web Connection" containing the message, "Please wait reading configuration settings."

Problem:

When ViaDuct 4.x is installed it replaces the default telnet protocol handler for telnet requests made through the browser.  (This is to accomodate WebWidget.)  Although the new handler is supposed to process non-ViaDuct requests properly, there may be some cases where the handler fails to launch properly.

Solution:

WARNING:  This technical bulletin describes changing entries in the operating system registry.  Only experienced Windows System Administrators should attempt modification of registry entries.  Incorrect modifications to the registry can render your system unusable.  Via Systems assumes no responsibilities for loss of data or system integrity due to the execution of the instructions contained herein.

Users who have not purchased WebWidget functionality can disable this by modifying their registry settings as follows.

  1. Press Start, click Run, and type the word REGEDIT and enter.
  2. Go to the following location in the registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\telnet\shell\open\command where there should be two settings; "Default" and "Original".  If there is only one entry you do not need to continue, close REGEDIT.
  3. To reset the telnet protocol to its orginal behavior, copy the string value in "Original" and paste it into "Default" then close REGEDIT.
